Joy on 'pig laws': ‘The rot from slavery is still with us in a thousand different ways’
Louisiana’s Supreme Court declined last week to review the life sentence of a Black man who was convicted more than two decades ago of trying to steal a pair of hedge clippers, court documents show. Sentences like these are an example of post Civil War rules known as “Pig Laws,” designed to keep Black people in poverty. Joy says, “But here’s the thing, the rot from slavery and its aftermath are still with us, in a thousand different ways.”
