Obama camp hits Romney over pal Trump

In a newly released web video, President Obama’s re-election team took a dig at Mitt Romney over his ties to birther conspirator Donald Trump.

In a newly released web video, President Obama’s re-election team took a dig at Mitt Romney over his ties to birther conspirator Donald Trump. Romney, who is on track to cinch up the GOP nomination later today, attended a fundraiser with the reality TV show star at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. And to Team Obama, Romney's guilty by association.

The video compares Trump's latest rants on the president's citizenship to some of the crazier things said in the last presidential race and questions Romney's character for not standing up "to the voices of extremism in his party" like John McCain did in 2008. It uses the example a female McCain supporter calling Obama an Arab at a campaign event. McCain politely, yet firmly, corrected her by saying, "No ma'am, no ma'am. He's a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with." The Obama video asks, "Why won't Mitt Romney do the same?"

Trump provided one possible answer in a tweet. "@BarackObama is practically begging @MittRomney to disavow the place of birth movement, he is afraid of it and for good reason. He keeps using @SenJohnMcCain as an example, however, @SenJohnMcCain lost the election. Don't let it happen again."

Instead of condemning Trump's birtherism chatter, Romney stated he necessarily doesn't agree with all of his fans.

"You know, I don't agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in," Romney told reporters on Monday. "But I need to get 50.1 percent or more and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people."

In recent months, Trump has become a full blown campaign surrogate for Romney, making robocalls, doing interviews and even hosting a fundraiser on Ann Romney's birthday.
