Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat from New York, is calling on Congress to take up gun safety laws, in the wake of the Boston terror attack.
“One thing that Congress can do right now is pass the gun safety laws," Maloney said. "As it stands right now, the next Tamerlan can go to a gun show and buy all the guns he wants, all the weapons he wants and no problem, no questions asked. I think at the very least Congress should pass sensible gun safety laws, that law enforcement is asking for. Law enforcement really wants the bill that I authored several years ago, that would make trafficking and guns a felony. I mean, how dumb can we be?”
It's not clear where Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who are accused of killing three people and injuring hundreds more in the Boston Marathon bombings, got the gun or guns. Police recovered a single 9 millimeter handgun in Watertown, Massachusetts, that they believe was used against police officers in a shootout that resulted in Tamerlan's death.
NBC News confirmed neither brother had a gun permit or a petition to carry a weapon and Massachusetts law states an individual must be 21 to own a gun. Dzhokar Tsarnaev is 19.
This comes as West Virginia's Democratic Senator Joe Manchin insists he will not give up the fight for a background checks bill.
"I truly believe if we have time to sell the bill, and people read the bill, and I'm giong to go anywhere in the country and debate anyone on this issue, read the bill and tell me what you don't like," Manchin said on Fox News Sunday.
