Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, the co-founders of the gun control group Americans for Responsible Solutions, sat down with NBC Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell Sunday at the Aspen Ideas Festival to talk about a path forward for common-sense gun control measures.

"I want to build a better place," Giffords told Mitchell regarding how she maintains her incredible optimism. Giffords was critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head in January 2011 while conducting a town hall event in her district.

"Gabby, in your recovery, is this a process of trying to reclaim the old Gabby Giffords? Or a new Gabby Giffords?" Mitchell asked.

"The new one. Better, stronger, tougher," Giffords replied.
