The war of words breaking out between Donald Trump and Jerry Seinfeld is careening into the bizarre as if it weren't already there from the start. Seinfeld has backed out of an event arranged by The Donald's son, uneasy with Trump's incessant questioning about President Obama's birthplace.
In a letter obtained by The New York Post, Trump goes after Seinfeld:
"I just learned you canceled a show for my son's charity," Trump fired off in a scorching letter to Seinfeld yesterday, "because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader.""We don't care that you broke your commitment," he wrote, "even though the children of St. Jude are very disappointed, and despite the fact that your manager clearly stated you are 'truly a man of his word.'"What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, 'The Marriage Ref,' even though I thought it was absolutely terrible . . . Despite its poor ratings, I didn't cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did."The letter ends with the kiss-off, "You should be ashamed of yourself!"
The Post reports that Seinfeld agreed to be a part of the charity event for St. Jude's Hospital before Trump began his fake supposed possible run for the White House.
A rep for Seinfeld told the paper:
"Jerry . . . feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse . . . He has respectfully withdrawn from the event, and is making a contribution both to the Eric Trump Foundation and to [St. Jude]."
But just when you thought this story couldn't get any weirder was over, the man booked to replace Seinfeld at the event decided to have his say. Reality TV star and former Poison frontman Bret "Rock of Love" Michaels told Hollywood Life:
“We should never allow the spirit of generosity to be overshadowed by divisive political beliefs - and when it comes to saving the life of a child, there is absolutely no room for political rhetoric. Regardless of political views, the only thing that should matter is the lives of these children and their families, so I’m eager to offer my assistance to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in any way that I can.”
I'm all for charity. And it should be noted again that Jerry Seinfeld is still making two contributions. But can we just chalk this up to another reason the idea of a Trump White House is absurd? After all, this is a guy who's spent his career picking fights with other celebrities just to stay in the headlines.
