NSC statement on consulting with Congress

Regarding a separate war powers resolution report for new military in Iraq

The Rachel Maddow Show received the following statement from the National Security Council regarding whether the White House will send another War Powers Resolution report for the new group of 130 military members sent to Iraq today:

“The Administration has consulted closely with Congress about the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, including the events that led to the August 8 War Powers Resolution notification. In the War Powers Resolution report filed on August 8, the President notified Congress that he authorized U.S. forces to undertake limited military operations for two specific missions – to protect American personnel in Iraq by stopping the current advance on Erbil by the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and to help forces in Iraq as they fight to break the siege of Mount Sinjar and to protect and provide humanitarian assistance to the civilians trapped there. The current deployment will support the operations related to Mount Sinjar.”               —Bernadette Meehan, National Security Council spokesperson
