Welcome a new Clinton to the world: Charlotte

Chelsea Clinton gave birth to Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky Friday, she announced on Twitter.

Bill and HIllary Clinton are officially grandparents.

After months of anticipation from the former first couple, their daughter Chelsea, 34, gave birth Friday to a girl, Charlotte, she announced on Twitter.

“Marc and I are full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky,” she wrote. She’s been married to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky since 2010.

A spokesperson for Chelsea Clinton confirmed the baby was born Friday, but did not provide further details.

Chelsea, who helps run the Clinton family’s charitable foundation, spent three days earlier this week on stage emceeing events and giving speeches and interviews at the foundation’s annual Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).

With the nearness of her due date evident, Chelsea’s baby was a major topic of conversation both on stage and off. Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has often joked about urging her daughter to have a child, and both she and her husband gushed about the prospect of being grandparents. “I’m excited. I’m out of control,” former president Bill Clinton said at CGI.

In an interview at the event, Chelsea said she and her husband had decided to keep the gender of the baby a surprise, even to themselves.

Everywhere Hillary Clinton goes ahead of a potential president run, people offer her warm wishes about the grandchild or ask her questions. “On my book tour over the summer, I must have shaken 70,000 hands and over half of them mentioned something about being a grandparent,” she said at CGI.

Chelsea, who seemed unencumbered by her large belly as she hosted the event, praised her own parents -- and hinted at more grandchildren on the way. “I just hope that I will be as good a mom to my child and, hopefully, children as my mom was to me,” she Chelsea.

Earlier this month, former president George W. Bush gave his predecessor advice on becoming a grandparent. “Be prepared to fall completely in love again,” Bush said during a joint appearance in Washington. “You’re not going to believe it. You’re just not going to believe the joy and the fun.”

Chelsea's parents, Bill and Hillary Clinton, released a statement Saturday afternoon celebrating the birth of their granddaughter: "We are thrilled to be with our daughter and her husband as they welcome their daughter into the world. Chelsea is well and glowing. Marc is bursting with pride. Charlotte's life is off to a good start."
