Republicans are ready to tackle larger issues, Texas Rep. says

The Republican party is "absolutely" ready to tackle issues such as Social Security and Medicare, said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas.

The Republican party is "absolutely" ready to tackle issues such as Social Security and Medicare, but Washington has to stop kicking the can down the road, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas said on Monday's Morning Joe.

When host Joe Scarborough asked Brady, a fellow Republican, if his party "has the guts" to tackle difficult problems, Brady said: “Absolutely yes. We are really ready in a serious way to tackle Social Security."

“We would like the president to join us," he said, adding that there needs to be a discussion about what really needs to be done to solve the bigger budget issues.

But, he added, the country keeps "going back to the same crisis time and time again.”

Brady, who disagreed with the individuals who believed the country could default on the debt, said the government must change its spending habits.

“You didn’t send us up there to be popular," he said about the party's leaders. "You sent us up there to get stuff done."
