 Perry’s in! Gov. Rick Perry confirmed just hours before tonight’s debate that he’s getting in the 2012 race. He’ll formally announce his candidacy in Charleston, South Carolina this Saturday, the day of the Iowa Straw Poll. And we’ve seen this before: Sarah Palin diverted her “One Nation” bus tour, so she’ll be in Iowa, too. Tonight’s debate is the biggest showdown to date for the GOP 2012 candidates to date, but Perry and Palin are sucking up all the oxygen in the room (and the debate hall, and the fairgrounds). Fight Night. The Republicans running for president meet in a debate in Iowa tonight. The stakes are high for Iowa frontrunner Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty, who needs a good showing tonight and in Saturday's Ames Straw Poll. Mitt Romney's back in the mix in Iowa, too, no doubt nervous about Rick Perry's imminent entrance to the race. Politico previews the debate tonight. read more

Matthews not impressed by GOP candidates

Let me finish tonight with this small list of Republican presidential candidates. Can anyone of either party remember a smaller, shorter, less dramatic pack of people?Several of the names are simply the predictable set of politicians who have held lower office and have the presidency on their to-do list.  That includes Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman and, I would suppose for almost a half century, Mitt Romney. read more
