The Trail: Singing candidate could keep South Dakota seat for Dems

Could there be a singing senator in South Dakota who keeps the seat for Democrats? Today, The Trail takes us to the Mount Rushmore State where former Republican Gov. Mike Rounds should be running away with the race–but a new poll indicates this is far from over.

How improbable is a Republican loss in this race? the Republican candidate for governor is up more than 20 points in the latest polls, and back in 2010, Democrats took a pass on even challenging Sen. John Thune, who was unopposed in his run for re-election.

So can Democratic candidate Rick Weiland or former Republican senator-turned-independent Larry Pressler win in November? As one Democratic strategist told msnbc’s Suzy Khimm, “At this point, this is Mike Rounds’s race to lose, and he’s done a good job of losing it.”
