Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson of Florida said Sunday that intervening in Syria was not in the best interests of the United States, and said that any strike in the country would fail to remove Bashar al-Assad from power.
“First, it's not our responsibility," Grayson, who launched the website dontattacksyria.com, said. "Secondly, whatever we do won't actually accomplish anything useful. Third, it's expensive, and fourth, it's dangerous.”
The congressman questioned President Obama's claim Syria's use of chemical weapons threatening US national security. He added that neither the US nor our Allies in the region, including Jordan, Turkey, and Israel, have been attacked.
"We have our own problems to deal with and we're not the world's policemen nor the world's judge, jury, and executioner," Grayson said.
Even if the US were to step in, Grayson said, there was little evidence that the action would protect the country from future chemical attacks.
“I have yet to hear anybody explain to me why our attacking Syria will take away their ability to commit such an attack in the future," Grayson said.
