Former CIA-director David Petraeus is the latest in a long line of prominent Washington figures to find himself embroiled in a sex scandal.

The City University of New York named former CIA Director David Petraeus as visiting professor of public policy at Macaulay Honors College, effective Aug. 1. The retired U.S. general is slowly re-entering the public arena since he stepped down from his CIA post in disgrace more than six months ago.

"With his appointment, our students will have a unique opportunity to learn about public policy firsthand from a distinguished leader with extraordinary experience and expertise in international security issues, intelligence matters, and nation-building," the university's chancellor, Dr. Matthew Goldstein, said in a statement.

Petraeus served almost 40 years in uniform in Cold War Europe, Haiti, Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He earned several U.S. military, State Department, United Nations, and NATO decorations, as well as medals from 12 foreign countries. In 2010, President Obama appointed him to replace retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Petraeus resigned from his 14-month CIA appointment in Nov. 2012, after his extramarital affair with biographer Paula Broadwell was exposed. The FBI is now investigating allegations that Broadwell received or improperly stored classified information during their affair.
