Congressman-elect Ritchie Torres (D-NY) made history this week as one of two New York democrats becoming the first openly gay Black people elected to Congress. He grew up in public housing, and noted, “for me, the most powerful motivator for my public service is my lived experience,” Torres said. “Instead of standing on the sidelines, why not become the change I wish to see?”
