Ahead of today’s symbolic House vote on the so-called "Cut, Cap, and Balance" bill, we noticed a familiar line spoken on the House floor.
While discussing spending cuts, Congressman Sander Levin of Michigan declared, "the Republicans are trying to repeal the second half of the 20th century."
You're preaching to the choir, buddy. We’ve been saying the same thing since mid-June, which is why we started our on-going web series, Repealing The 20th Century. But we expanded it to include the whole century, not just one half.
The measure in question would drastically cut spending immediately, cap future spending and force Congress to make a balanced budget amendment to the constitution, requiring a two-thirds majority to raise taxes. Many Democrats argue it's too extreme of an approach.
While it will most likely clear the House, the tea party-backed legislation has no chance of passing through the Senate. Even if it did, Obama threatened to veto it if it ever hit his desk, saying it "would set unrealistic spending caps that could result in significant cuts to education, research and development, and other programs critical to growing our economy and winning the future. It could also lead to severe cuts in Medicare and Social Security."
