The space shuttle Enterprise cruised past the Statue of Liberty this morning, floating atop a barge in New York’s Hudson River. The shuttle was on its way to its final destination at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. New Yorkers previously got a glimpse of the shuttle as it was flown to JFK International Airport in April. The 171,000-pound craft will next be lifted onto the Intrepid's flight deck for an upcoming aerospace exhibit scheduled to open next month.
The Enterprise, the first of NASA's shuttles. was a prototype for the fleet. While it flew within the atmosphere during landing tests, it was never capable of space flight.
