Rep. Ron Paul announced today he's forming a campaign exploratory committee, potentially seeking the Republican nomination for president.

The Texas Congressman spread the word in Iowa. He told a small audience at a hotel in Des Moines he was eager to promote his views about reducing the scope of government, in particular.

Tea Party supporters heart him. But if he goes for the GOP nom, he could split the votes even more.

Iowa will hold the nation's first presidential caucuses in February.

Paul ran for president in 2008 and finished fifth in the Iowa caucuses.
