As you may or may not know depending on if you're a "Gleek," last night was the season finale of FOX's Glee (read more about that here if you don't mind spoilers). From the beginning, the show has contained messages about acceptance and tolerance. But during last night's show, one of those messages actually appeared during a commercial break. A new PSA entitled "Not Acceptable" features Glee co-stars Jane Lynch and Lauren Potter. The ad takes aim at the prevalent use of an unflattering word that's sometimes used to describe people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The PSA makes striking comparisons with other slurs and is quite effective. Several organizations are behind this message including the Anti-Defamation League, Special Olympics, Best Buddies, GLAAD, The Hispanic Federation, National Puerto Rican Coalition, The Asian-American Foundation, AbilityPath.org and the NAACP.
It's all part of an ongoing campaign called Spread the Word to End the Word to "to eradicate the derogatory use of the word 'retard(ed)' from everyday use." You can read more about it on the campaign's website, R-Word.org.
