Call it a happy coincidence the mother of all gay pride parties coincided with the new marriage equality bill. An estimated half million people hit the streets of New York to celebrate yesterday, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
"New York has sent a message to the nation," Cuomo said before marching in the Pride parade. "It is time for marriage equality."
Pride party-goers held up "Thank you, Gov. Cuomo" and "Promise kept” signs.
Cuomo signed the marriage equality bill into law late-Friday after it squeaked by the state Senate in a 33-29 vote.
Today is the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which took place in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village and marked the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States.
New York joins Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C., in allowing same-sex couples to wed.
