President Obama endorsed a key Palestinian demand in today’s highly anticipated speech on U.S. policy in the Middle East and North Africa.
Obama called upon Israel to go back to its 1967 borders, which once occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.
Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also floated around the same concept, but Republicans are already attacking him for, in Mitt Romney’s words, throwing “Israel under the bus.”
Obama is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Friday.
The president addressed the recent uprisings across the region, nicknamed the Arab Spring, and announced financial incentives aimed at helping Egypt and Tunisia preserve their new democracies.
