On the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death, President Obama today declared the defeat of 9/ll terrorists now "within reach" as the war in Afghanistan winds down.

Wrapping up a surprise visit to the country, the president addressed the nation in a televised speech from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. "We can see the light of a new day on the horizon," said Obama, discussing a joint agreement he signed with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The deal outlines "a future in which the war ends," according to Obama, who also recognized that "many Americans are tired of war." He promised, "As our coalition agreed, by the end of 2014 the Afghans will be fully responsible for the security of their country."

"The agreement we signed today sends a clear message to the Afghan people. As you stand up, you will not stand alone," Obama said. "It establishes the basis of our cooperation over the next decade, including shared commitments to combat terrorism and strengthen democratic institutions."

Obama noted 10,000 troops left last year and 23,000 U.S. troops are scheduled to be withdrawn by the end of the summer.
