Newt Gingrich is probably wishing he was back on vacation. Fresh off a long cruise to the Greek Isles (because that’s what you do when you’re running for president if you’re Newt Gingrich), the Republican presidential hopeful got some bad news at the office.
Top members of his staff jumped ship today, potentially sinking his already troubled campaign. Two sources close to the mess confirmed campaign manager Rob Johnson, strategists Sam Dawson and Dave Carney, spokesman Rick Tyler and consultants Katon Dawson in South Carolina and Craig Schoenfeld in Iowa all walked out because of the direction of the campaign.
Gingrich plans to stay in the race. In a newly released statement via his Facebook page, he said, "I am committed to running the substantive, solutions-oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring. The campaign begins anew Sunday in Los Angeles."
Gingrich announced he's running for president on May 11. In less than a month, he’s gotten a lot of criticism for his $500K Tiffany’s bill and flip-flopping on the Ryan budget plan. The guy was even hit with glitter. And we've still got a long way to go until November 2012.
