President Obama is the projected winner in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,  NBC News is projecting, as Mitt Romney's path to 270 electoral votes narrows fast.

President Obama is the projected winner in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,  NBC News is projecting, as Mitt Romney's path to 270 electoral votes narrows fast.

Romney had made a late play for both traditionally blue states, running a slew of ads and visiting them several times. But he always appeared to be fighting an uphill battle.

Many Republicans hoped that Paul Ryan would help move Wisconsin into the Republican column, offering Romney an alternative path to the presidency. "Next to Ann, Paul Ryan was the best choice I ever made," Romney said during the campaign.

Romney's hopes of stealing a Democratic-leaning state from Obama's column appear to have foundered early Tuesday. Earlier, NBC News called Michigan for Obama.

Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania also was re-elected, defeating Republican Tom Smith.

Late Update, 9:50pm: NBC News is also projecting that Obama has won New Hampshire.
