Birther congressman robotically repeats talking point five times in TV interview

Not long ago, Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican from Colorado, told a group of backers that he didn't know whether President Obama was born in the United States.

Not long ago, Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican from Colorado, told a group of backers that he didn't know whether President Obama was born in the United States. And he added: "But I do know this: In his heart, he's not an American."

After a recording of Coffman's comments was released, the congressman tried to defuse the controversy by saying that he "misspoke." An enterprising local TV reporter wasn't satisfied, and tracked Coffman down to ask him for a fuller explanation.

What ensued, shown Wednesday night on The Ed Show, was one of the most remarkable pieces of political video we've seen in quite some time.

Watch:

His Democratic challenger Joe Miklosi told msnbc's Martin Bashir, "When I first heard Mike Coffman's comments, I thought I was watching a Saturday Night Live skit."

Or as Ed put it: "He speaks like a prisoner of war: Name, rank, and serial number."
