I was struck by Betsy’s comment that there are times when men don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help – like when they’re struggling with their golf swing, for instance. I think this is true when it comes to medicine as well. There are some conditions and ailments that men have no trouble seeking out medical attention for – a prescription for Viagra maybe. In other words, if they see a practical solution to an obvious problem, they don’t have much trouble saying, “I need help.” So when it comes to mental health, it seems to me the challenge for psychiatrists is to frame their services in more practical, immediate terms that might resonate with the average male. Do I have any idea how to do this? Not really….but I’d sure welcome any helpful suggestions.
