On Wednesday evening, Americans came together to watch the premiere of Sharkando 2: The Second One, the sequel to last summer’s surprise hit.
The SyFy Original returned to TV Wednesday evening and showcased the sharks attacking Ian Zering, Tara Reid, and other celebrities who made cameo appearances in a new major metropolitan area: New York City.
Last summer’s Sharkando had 5.3 million viewers and a created a social media frenzy—and Sharknado 2 was no different. From the instant meme creations to the hashtags on Twitter, Sharkando 2 flooded Twitter feeds and Facebook timelines beginning the minute the first scene aired.
While Twitter may not be the officially ratings release for Sharknado 2, it is a clear indication of the public’s view. Nielson reports that there were 581,000 tweets about Sharknado 2 sent by 188,000 unique users and seen a total of 67.2 million times surpassing the first Sharknado. This data goes in line with social media tracking site Topsy, which shows #Sharknado2TheSecondOne was the top trending hashtag on Twitter, recording more than 3.6K tweets over the past 12 hours.
