First Lady Michelle Obama arrived Thursday in Beijing with plans to take in the sights and promote education and cultural ties along the three-city, seven-day visit.
To help stress the importance of her nonpolitical "people-to-people" trip, the first lady wants young people across America to follow the trip online. “A visit like this is an important opportunity not just to share China’s rich history and culture with young people like you, but to connect you with the stories of young people in China. Young peple who share many of the hopes and dreams as you,” the first lady said in a video message posted on PBS.
On Monday, the above photo was posted on the @michelleobama Instagram account, serving as an official invite for everyone to follow along. "The first lady is heading to China for an official visit -- and she wants young people across America to join her! Follow along as she highlights the power and importance of education," the photo caption reads.
"No matter what country we live in, we're all facing so many of the same challenges- from ensuring that students get a good education; to fightingpoverty, hunger and disease; to addressing threats to our planet like climate change," the first lady wrote earlier this month on the White House's blog. "These issues affect every last one of us, so it's critically important that young people like you learn about what's going on not just here in America, but around the world. Because when it comes tot he challenges we face, soon, all of you will be leading the way."
Along with updating her Instagram account throughout the trip, the first lady promised to blog and tweet along the way using her @flotus twitter handle. Here are more photos from the trip:
