Young ladies & gents –
This week’s Call to Action focuses on you – college students. We know many of you are heading to campus this week, setting up your dorm room or apartment and meeting new roomies. We wanted your help on an important story that affects all of you.
Last semester, we saw a number of student-initiated actions against colleges & universities around the country. It was due to a pretty outrageous statistic: one in five female students is sexually assaulted while in college, and sexual assault on campus is chronically underreported.
It is a national epidemic. As President Obama said last spring, “Sexual violence it is not just a crime against individuals – it threatens our entire country.” The task force he established last January, the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault, identified 76 colleges and universities under federal investigation for how they handle campus sexual assaults. And the U.S. Department of Education is looking into whether these schools have actually created a hostile environment for learning – because of their ineffective response to sexual assault complaints.
We’ve heard from college administrators about how they are handling this problem on their campuses, but we want to know what you think about the efforts at your school. Our reporting indicates that the data collected so far may not actually reflect the full scope of the problem.
So, we need your first-hand account.
