Former Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower got treated pretty mean by Rick Perry, in their 1990 race for that job, and Mr. Hightower has not forgotten it. Last night, he talked about Governor Perry's comeback attempt in this year's presidential primary. A children's treasury:
Quote No. 1: "Well, you know, Lyndon Johnson used to say you can't make chicken salad out of chicken manure, though he used a little more barnyard epithet than 'manure.' But nonetheless, that's what they're working with."
Quote No. 2: "He has put the goober in gubernatorial."
Quote No. 3: "You could go out here to where I am in Austin, Texas, to any restaurant or cafe or bar and say to a waitress, did you know Rick Perry's created a million jobs in Texas? And she'll say, yes, I know, I have three of them."
Quote No. 4: "When Rick Perry says I can do for America what I've done for Texas, pay attention. That's no idle threat."
Quote No. 5: "He's tighter than the bark on a tree to big oil. Big oil is his number one campaign contributor, having put more than $11 million into his campaigns. So, this guy is big oil's wet dream, actually."
Quote No. 6: "If ignorance ever goes to $100 a barrel, you want to get the drilling rights on Perry's head."
Personally, I'm in it for Quote No. 4, about the idle threat. You?
