Wednesday's campaign round-up

Today's installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.

* Congress is poised to get a new lawmaker, with state Sen. Katherine M. Clark (D) easily winning a congressional special election in Massachusetts' 5th district yesterday. She'll replace Ed Markey (D), who won a Senate special election earlier this year.

* In North Carolina, PPP shows Sen. Kay Hagan (D) in a tough re-election fight, leading one of her Republican rivals by two points, tied with two other Republicans, and trailing two Republicans by a couple of points.

* In Michigan, PPP also shows Gov. Rick Snyder (R) with a modest lead over Mark Schauer (D) in next year's gubernatorial race, 44% to 40%.

* In Ohio, Eric Kearney, the Democrat running for lieutenant governor, ended his statewide campaign yesterday, following revelations that he owed nearly $1 million in back taxes. Ed FitzGerald (D), hoping to take on Gov. John Kasich (R), now needs a new running mate.

* Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) is launching a new ad campaign in Louisiana, showing her critical of the Affordable Care Act and boasting, "I'm fixing it."

* In Nebraska, Pete Festersen's (D) on-again, off-again congressional campaign against Rep. Lee Terry (R) is apparently off-again. Festersen, the president of the Omaha City Council, said the timing isn't right for his family.

* Wasting no time at all, five Republicans have already filed to run for Rep. Steve Stockman's (R) U.S. House seat in Texas now that the congressman is running for the Senate.

* And in Virginia, E.W. Jackson (R) may have failed spectacularly to become the commonwealth's lieutenant governor, but that won't stop him from creating a new political action committee.
