Wednesday's campaign round-up

Today's installment of campaign-related news items that won't necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's (R) trespassing charge comes at a horrible time for his congressional campaign, and will force him to make a court appearance filing a complaint from his ex-wife.

* Perhaps hoping to change the subject, Sanford's team unveiled a new attack ad this morning, criticizing Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D) for her support of labor unions.

* Not surprisingly given the circumstances, the Democratic and Republican candidates running in Massachusetts' U.S. Senate special election have put their campaigns on hold. Their respective primaries are, however, on April 30 -- a week from Tuesday.

* The ethics investigation targeting Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is based on allegations she improperly used campaign funds. What's more, former aides who've been interviewed as part of the probe believe the scope of the investigation is broadening.

* In Tennessee, scandal-plagued Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R) already has a primary opponent, state Sen. Jim Tracy, who raised about $450,000 in the first quarter of 2013, which is a strong start.

* And former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) is a competitive mayoral candidate in New York City in a new WNBC-TV poll conducted by Marist.
