Wednesday's Mini-Report, 10.28.20

Today's edition of quick hits.

Today's edition of quick hits:

* Brett Giroir: "The Trump administration's Covid-19 testing czar warned Wednesday that local governments may be forced to impose 'draconian measures' if Americans don't start taking safety precautions seriously and the coronavirus crisis worsens."

* Europe: "Both Germany and France announced new nationwide lockdowns on Wednesday as Europe enters a deadly new phase of the coronavirus pandemic."

* Possible trouble ahead: "Small indoor gatherings of families and friends are driving coronavirus outbreaks across the country — and that has worrying implications for Thanksgiving, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said Wednesday."

* I guess Trump won't be tweeting about the stock market today: "Wall Street sank again on Wednesday, as soaring coronavirus infection rates pushed some cities to introduce a new round of restrictive measures.... The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down by around 940 points Wednesday afternoon, its worst day since June. The blue-chip index lost all gains for October, falling well below the 27,000 mark after a volatile session. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite index both ended the day down by around 3.6 percent."

* An awful step backward: "President Trump will open up more than half of Alaska's Tongass National Forest to logging and other forms of development, according to a notice posted Wednesday, stripping protections that had safeguarded one of the world's largest intact temperate rainforests for nearly two decades."

* Trump's failure in Iran couldn't be more obvious: "Iran has begun construction at its Natanz nuclear facility, satellite images released Wednesday show, just as the U.N. nuclear agency acknowledged Tehran is building an underground advanced centrifuge assembly plant after its last one exploded in a reported sabotage attack last summer."

* Vermont Secretary of State's office formally requested that the Supreme Court "correct the erroneous claim" Justice Brett Kavanaugh included in a concurrence this week.

* What a deeply strange political dynamic: "The wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is using her Facebook page to amplify unsubstantiated claims of corruption by Joe Biden."

* It's about time: "The U.S. State Department has backed down in two legal fights over granting citizenship to the children of same-sex couples born abroad after The Daily Beast brought the issue to light last fall. The State Department on Monday withdrew its appeal in the case concerning the daughter of Roee and Adiel Kiviti, according to nonprofit legal group Lambda Legal and Immigration Equality."

See you tomorrow.
