Law enforcement officials held an hour-long briefing this morning in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, updating the media and the public on the latest information after yesterday's violence at a Sikh temple.
While there's still no shortage of questions for which there are no answers, we have a fuller picture than we did last night. The alleged gunman is Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran, dishonorably discharged in 1998, who is believed to be responsible for killing six people -- five men and one woman -- before being shot dead by a police officer. The names of the victims have not yet been released, but they range in age from 41 to 84. Three other people in the Sikh temple were shot, two of whom remain in critical condition.
Lt. Brian Murphy, ambushed when he stopped to help a victim, was shot eight or nine times. Though he was wearing a bullet-proof vest, Murphy was hit in his extremities and suffered a serious wound in his neck. He remains in critical condition.
Page, who legally purchased a 9mm semi-automatic handgun within the last 10 days, is also believed to have been a former leader of a neo-Nazi music group.
A lingering question has to do with whether Page received any assistance. At the briefing, an FBI official identified another man as a "person of interest," but would not elaborate.
