Monday's Campaign Round-Up, 6.16.14

Today's installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
Today's installment of campaign-related news items that won't necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* A new Gallup poll shows Congress' approval rating at 16% -- an all-time low going into a midterm election cycle. Thanks to the lack of competitive districts, however, public contempt for Congress will probably lead to minimal changes in Congress.

* In Massachusetts' gubernatorial race, state Attorney General Martha Coakley's (D) campaign ran into a little trouble over the weekend when state Treasurer Steve Grossman (D) came out on top at the state party's convention. The two will be joined by Don Berwick in a three-way primary on Sept. 9.

* Idaho's state Republican Party convention was a bit of a disaster over the weekend: as the gathering degenerated, the convention "adjourned without electing a chairman, setting a platform or doing any of its scheduled business." Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho), running for House Majority Leader, said he worked for weeks to prevent this fiasco, which may not help his case on Capitol Hill.

* In Mississippi's U.S. Senate Republican primary, incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran has a new ad targeting challenger Chris McDaniel's record of extreme rhetoric.

* In related news, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is going on the air in support of Cochran, buying TV time in the state. The runoff primary is a week from tomorrow.

* In Hawaii, Gov. Neil Abercrombie (D) is struggling in a statewide poll, trailing David Ige in a Democratic primary by 11 points.

* And in New York, a new Siena poll shows incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on track for a landslide victory in his bid for a second term, leading his Republican challenger by a whopping 36 points.
