Part of why we know anything at all about way our country conducts war is that photographers are willing to tromp out there and take pictures of it. Just over a year ago, Joao Silva of the New York Times lost both legs when he stepped on a landmine in southern Afghanistan. That he lived was a miracle; that he took pictures while he nearly died shows what he lives to do.
Yesterday, Joao joined the hand cyclists in the New York City marathon. He says his other passion is for motorcyles and race cars that go fast. Add to hand cycles to that list, and get out of his way.
