Great expectations from Rick Santorum

If you watch Rick Santorum work a room, as we got a chance to do in New Hampshire on Friday, you'll see that he can come off as a little prickly. One voter told him she hailed from way up in northern New Hampshire, and when he found out where exactly he said, Oh, you're not from that far north.

Just a little dig, and for no good reason. Mr. Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, knows he can't win in New Hampshire, but the game for him is about exceeding expectations. He's on to South Carolina, where his Christianist politics might play well. Today he launched a moneybomb, very common in campaigning. The idea is to set a goal you know you can reach, and then huzzah a lot as you blast past that figure and set a new one, and then a new one beyond that. Mr. Santorum's got the thermometer set to $1 million. He's starting out this morning with $36,008. We'll see.
