The Romney campaign is pioneering a new tactic of training Republican workers to mislead voters in order to discourage them from voting, alleges Think Progress. The liberal website reports it has obtained documents from a Romney poll watcher training session which encourage volunteers to mislead Wisconsin voters.
"Not only are they being instructed to sign in at the polls as a 'concerned citizen' rather than disclose any affiliation with the Romney campaign or the Republican Party, they are also being given highly misleading and sometimes downright false information," Scott Keyes of Think Progress told PoliticsNation on Tuesday night. At least 17 such training sessions have occurred around the state.
One example Keyes gave of the factually inaccurate information being given to Republican volunteers is that anyone who has committed a felony in Wisconsin is ineligible to vote. "That's just patently not true," said Keyes. Wisconsin law says that any felon can vote once he or she has completed their sentence. Tens of thousands of Wisconsinites fall into that category.
Keyes said the Romney campaign's deceptions are likely replicated in other states as well. "That's the scary thing: For every document we obtained, there are probably 10, 20 or 50 others we haven't," he said.
