Among the first enslaved Africans who stepped onto Virginia’s shores in 1619 were a young couple, Antoney and Isabell. Carolita Jones Cope is descended from their son, believed to be the first black baby to be born in North America. Her family has now planted crosses on the unmarked graves of their ancestors and other slaves on the land they cleared in Virginia.Aug. 24, 2019
