Remembering Watts 50 years later

From the archives: August 11 marks 50 years since racial tensions boiled over and riots broke out in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, California in 1965. The catalyst for the riot was a violent traffic stop. During the five days of violence, 34 people were killed and over 1,000 injured. The Watts riot foreshadowed several future rebellions across the country, including those in Detroit, Baltimore and Newark.
