Mitt Romney's long series of self-destructive zingers may have cost him the election. After a surreptitious video caught the GOP candidate saying that 47% of voters were "dependent on the government," Romney confirmed what many progressives had long suspected: He meant his words when he said he doesn't care for poor people.
The failed GOP presidential candidate continued to step in it long after the last election ballots were cast, doubling down on the tenor behind his 47% comments. In yet another leaked recording, Romney blamed his loss on the "gifts" President Obama gave to minority, youth, and women voters.
“What the president, president’s campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote,” Romney said in a conference call to donors.
Romney later went on to win PolitiFact's fourth-ever "Lie of the Year" award for his Jeep ad that falsely claimed that, thanks to Obama, Chrysler planned to move U.S. Jeep manufacturing jobs to China.
