New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie could announce a bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination as early as next week, Politico reported Tuesday evening.
Christie said earlier this month that he would announce his 2016 decision in June, noting that he’s no “wallflower” and would make his plans known. On the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in late April, Christie said his announcement would come in May or June.

While Christie has long been seen as a potential 2016 contender, the governor’s standing in his home state has taken a hit. Earlier Tuesday, a new poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind showed Christie has an approval rating of just 30% among Garden State voters. Fifty-five percent of New Jersey voters disapprove of Christie’s job performance, according to the poll.
Despite the lackluster poll numbers, Christie has been traveling the country in anticipation of an expected 2016 campaign. If Christie runs for president, he would join a crowded Republican field. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is expected to launch his own presidential bid Wednesday in Kenner, Louisiana.
