MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow visited "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Thursday and chatted with the host about what her day-to-day is like since Donald Trump joined the Republican presidential field.
“My job every day is like I paint houses with a nail polish brush” in an attempt to give people the larger picture on crucial issues, she explained. But now, with Trump leading the GOP pack, Maddow joked that it’s more like “God giving me a power brush."
“It’s a blessing for us. I don’t know that it is for the country,” she added with a laugh.
Fallon pressed the MSNBC host on whether she thinks Trump actually wants to be president, or if the bombastic mogul is just running to continue gaining notoriety.
“I can’t imagine that he actually wants to be president,” Maddow replied. “Look at what happens to people once they actually become president. Barack Obama is 40 years older than when he first became president.”
The job of president doesn’t seem to be very much fun, she continued. “Maybe [Trump will] be elected and then outsource it to someone. China will do it for $3,” Maddow joked.
Fallon brought up the Republican front-runner’s performance at the first presidential debate, when he was the only candidate who would not promise to rule out a third-party run. The late-night host asked what might happen if Trump were to take that option.
“Donald Trump is running a totally right-wing campaign so if he ran as an Independent he would take a lot of votes away from the Republican candidate, so that would guarantee that the Democrat would win,” Maddow posited.
Fallon and Maddow also chatted about shared pastimes of drinking beer and going fishing, and their fondness for country music. With regards to alcohol, Maddow shared a cocktail recipe with Fallon — one she calls “The Millionaire.”
It’s made of sloe gin, apricot liqueur and lime juice. “It’s not very tasty,” Maddow conceded. “The Millionaire is a terrible drink.”
