President Obama's campaign improved its month-to-month fundraising haul by about $40 million in August when it raised $114 million, compared to $75 million in July.

This is the first time in several months that Democrats' have bested the monthly fundraising of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, but it's a narrow win. Romney and the Republican National Committee raised $112 million, just $2-million shy Obama and Democratic National Committee.

The Romney campaign said it has $168.5 million in cash on hand as well. That does not include the super PAC money that Republicans have been more adept at raising than the Democrats.
