Kofi Annan quits Syria

Kofi Annan who led the failed United Nations and Arab League peace envoy in Syria to try to negotiate a cease fire among the government and rebels, has resigned

Kofi Annan who led the failed United Nations and Arab League peace envoy in Syria to try to negotiate a cease fire among the government and rebels, has resigned his post in frustration.

Annan, a former UN secretary general, blamed Syrian forces but also the international community.

Without serious, purposeful and united international pressure, including from the powers of the region, it is impossible for me, or anyone, to compel the Syrian government in the first place, and also the opposition, to take the steps necessary to begin a political process,” he said.
