Jill Biden: 'Joe would make a great president'

This political season, Dr.

This political season, Dr. Jill Biden is focused on supporting President Obama's reelection campaign, but she believes her husband, the vice president, has the qualities to hold the highest office himself one day.

“Joe would make a great president,’’ she told TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. “Last time when he ran, I supported him. I wanted us out of Iraq and I felt that Joe would do that, but Barack did it, so everything has worked out.’’

Biden, who is promoting her new children’s book, "Don’t Forget, God Bless Our Troops," was noncommittal when discussing whether this would be her husband’s final campaign.

“I don’t know whether this is his last campaign,’’ she said. “We’re focusing on this campaign and winning this campaign. I take one campaign at a time.’’

Vice President Biden made headlines in early May when he spoke out about supporting gay marriage on "Meet the Press" before President Obama had the chance to make his own statement. Obama said Biden “got a little over his skis’’ with the early announcement, but Dr. Biden told TODAY that the two have since smoothed things over.

“Joe and Barack, they worked this out,’’ Biden said. “It’s fine. Joe speaks from the heart, and that’s what he did. That’s what I love about him. I know a lot of people aren’t used to that in politicians, and that’s what surprises them.’’

Dr. Biden's son, Beau, is currently deployed in Iraq as a member of the military. The Bidens celebrated the wedding of their daughter, Ashley, to Howard Krein this past weekend at their home in Delaware.

“It was beautiful,’’ Jill Biden said. “It was a magical evening.’’

Ashley, 31, is the Bidens’ youngest daughter.

“Joe cried,’’ his wife said. “He was a little emotional.’’
