Eva Longoria: Romney's on the 'wrong side' of Latino issues

Republicans scored points for scheduling a deep bench of racially diverse speakers at their convention in Tampa just weeks ago, but the move does not seem to be translating into support from the Hispanic community being showered on GOP candidate Mitt Romney.

Actress Eva Longoria, a longtime Obama surrogate who now co-chairs the re-election campaign, has been on the stump for the president driving home that very idea that the Republican Party—Romney in particular—is not in step with Hispanic voters.

“Mitt Romney is on the wrong side of every issue that pertains to Latinos,” Longoria told msnbc’s Thomas Roberts Thursday. “He’s not exactly living in reality with the Latino community.”

Romney's efforts to shift closer to the center from his sharp primary-season immigration policy dependent on "self-deportation" have yet to close the gap in approval. In most polls, Romney is trailing far behind President Obama with Hispanic voters, with the latest Pew poll showing Obama ahead of Romney by 45 points.

A poignant take away from Longoria’s speech at the Democratic National Convention put a human face to the country's wealth disparity and why Hollywood's A-list celebrities are flocking in support of the president.

"Mitt Romney would raise taxes on middle class families to cut his own and mine. And that's not who we are as a nation. And let me tell you why," she said. "Because the Eva Longoria who worked at Wendy's flipping burgers, she needed a tax break. But the Eva Longoria who works on movie sets does not."
