Former Senate majority leader and one-time GOP presidential candidate Bob Dole, 91, told MSNBC's Chuck Todd  that despite persistent gridlock, the U.S. Senate is not broken.

"Well, the Senate may not be broken, but it's badly bent," Dole said in an interview scheduled to air next week on "The Daily Rundown," adding that fixing it will require "some strong leadership in both parties."

On Thursday, both houses of Congress failed to pass emergency legislation that would address the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, increasing criticism of the U.S. government's overall effectiveness.
