What do you do when it's 4:30 a.m., you're still at the office, and perhaps you're bleary-eyed but maybe you're overly caffeinated? You pile into a cramped room, and you re-imagine a video by smart Swedish performer Robyn with maybe a cell phone camera or digicam, natch.
Well, that's what you do if you're 'SNL' star Taran Killam, anyway.
This video of Killam and co. doing the tune "Call Your Girlfriend" has been making the rounds, and for good reason. Robyn turns the tale of a love triangle on its head, and the song digs its emotional and musical hooks into you pretty quickly. And Killan's got some pretty serious moves to boot.
So while yes it's compelling to watch a dude in an ill-fitting, shag-carpet jacket gyrate in front of other "SNL" stars and writers in a room not equipped for his big moves, it's just as compelling for the song itself if you've never heard it.
And what else does this show us? That sometimes the best ideas and the best versions of those ideas exist in their no-budget, unrefined demo form.
Kudos to the camera guy as well for knowing how to get the most out of a shoebox.
So take four minutes and lose yourself in some flashlights and lip-syncing...and then watch Robyn's performance of the song on the show.
