Save Detroit with immigrants?

On this morning's show, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg repeated some controversial statements he made earlier this month on Meet the Press: Could immigration save America's struggling cities?

Mayor Bloomberg was on the show to talk about the role of small business in creating U.S. jobs and opportunities for women.

Quotes from his appearance, below:

In Washington, they keep talking about job creation don’t focus on three things that will create jobs in this country: one is immigration. Immigrants are twice as likely to start new businesses. I’ve said this before, if you want to solve the problem of big old industrial cities getting hollowed out, give visas to people willing to come live in those cities from around the world. They’ll start businesses and create jobs for people who live there now and more people will move in. The second is business confidence…. People don’t know what the [financial] laws are going to be on lending and borrowing money. One of the problems in this country is that we don’t know what the rules are that we have to play by and people don’t have confidence in this fractured partisanship we see in Washington that good government will be consistent.Third, you have to find something that will create jobs, not just profits. Big business can automate and do more with less, that’s what you’re seeing. Small businesses are labor-intensive and use non-traditional ways in selecting people [employees]. They don’t care where you went to school and might not care if you have a problem on your resume. Small businesses can give you on-the-job training. The unemployed in this country are typically past the age they typically go back to school. Education is a solution for young people.  For those already in the workplace, you have to give them on-the-job training.
