U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno: “War is pretty personal, and it really is about those guys to your right and left…and it’s about an inherent trust that you have to have in each other and dependence on each other…I think people underestimate the bond…there’s this bond…it’s not a stated bond. When I talk to soldiers today, I tell them when I go to combat, if you wear this uniform, I have an inherent trust in you that you will be there for me, and that’s absolutely critical to what we do as a profession. We have to rely on people we might not even know, but we know that they will be there for us.”
