This Saturday on MHP, midterms matter.
In 2011, Beyoncé sang “We Run the World.” Although some might dispute Mrs. Carter’s declaration, what we can’t deny is the increasing power of women of color in American politics. In fact, politicians like Virginia’s governor Terry McAuliffe and President Obama owe their wins to black women—an electorate with the highest voter registration and turnout in the country in the last election cycle.
Join us for an in-depth conversation about high-profile women candidates and ballot initiatives that could impede upon reproductive justice for women. Maya Harris, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, will join us to discuss a new report showing women of color have huge potential to sway electoral results, influence which candidates run and win, and play a greater role in shaping the policy agenda. Other guests will include Katon Dawson, national GOP consultant and former senior advisor to Governor Rick Perry; and Cristina Beltran, associate professor of Social & Cultural Analysis at New York University.
Then, courting the vote. It seems like Governor Scott Walker, in a fight for his political life, is well aware of the political importance of women; in fact, he’s now courting their vote—ads that seem to contradict his very record.
Keeping with the discussion on wooing votes, we’ll take a look at the stealth campaign to court the black vote. Dr. Beltran will be joined by Kai Wright, editor-at-large at Colorlines, and Ian Haney Lopez, author of Dog Whistle Politics: How Coded Racial Appeals Have Reinvented Racism and Wrecked the Middle Class; Joe Madison, host of "The Joe Madison Show" and Sirius XM’s "Urban View;" and Rev. Aaron Phillips to discuss the significance of urban airwaves, souls to the polls, and voter turnout.
